Abstract

This presentation explores the subject of immortality and the eternal through a comparative analysis of Hermetic, Alchemical, Vedic, and Taoist texts. The essence of each of these ancient wisdom traditions is the idea of a unified principle pervading and containing all things. Knowledge of this unified existence necessitates a reconciliation of opposites and the embodiment of presence, variously described as being with the Tao, being in the eighth sphere, seated in the lotus of the heart, or possessing the philosopher’s stone. Attuning with the universal Self is explored as an essential practice facilitating a co-creative and harmonious relationship with the eternally changing Cosmos. In our modern world of extreme political and social polarization, increased isolation, and technological over-stimulation, knowledge of our shared existence is essential to fostering deeper connectivity and creative solutions that will serve us now and in the future. Aligning with the Self and reconciling the opposition of Self and Other ultimately transmutes the collective consciousness. Rather than the complete dissolution of ego, this talk looks at the ways that ancient teachings support the development and expression of uniqueness, imagination, and creativity within the context of a unified existence.

This talk was originally presented as part of the online track of The New Hermopolis International Conference in 2024.
